The voice of the 16th century bowl

Western Iran mid 16th century. Brass cast and turned. Engraved decoration inlaid with black wax composition on hatched ground.

The inscription reads:

O You that drink from this food bowl
Do not drink other than to adorn polished usage
If you wish everything you are to be to your credit
Beware do not forget the obligation of salt and bread

O master of the bowl may you forget every sorrow
May what your soul yearns for ever be in your fold
As long as the bowl of Heaven and the globe of the Sun exist
May everything you taste from this bowl be to your health

Height: 17.8cm
Diameter of body: 32.5 cm – 32.6cm
Diameter of opening: 25.9-26cm
Diameter of ring foot; 16.9cm

The bowl, the only one of it’s kind on record, seems to be the ultimate development of a type encountered in 14th century metalwork from Fars.

The sound piece was created by sampling various strikes using my finger on the top edge of the bowl. The samples where then loaded into “Vessel” which ‘created’ this sound piece.

November: Shabaka Hutchings and the BBC Concert Orchestra

In this special one-off BBC Radio 3 commission Shabaka Hutchings, saxophonist, composer, and BBC Radio 3 New Generation artist joins forces with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

At the heart of the performance is Shabaka’s new band, Sons Of Kemet, comprising tuba sensation Oren Marshall and both Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford on drums.

The Guardian has already declared them ‘almost certain to dominate the best of 2012 lists at the end of the year’.

This premiere also features beatboxer Jason Singh and sonic frontiersman Leafcutter John, in an ambitious amalgamation of jazz, minimalist classical music and electronica.

Experiments with Painting and Music.

I had a lovely session yesterday with fellow V&A artist in residence Cherrell Avery. We had been talking for ages about collaborating and experimenting with sound, calligraphy, movement and music and yesterday something really interesting (for me anyway!) materialised. For the last couple of days I have been listening to two classical pieces, Sarabande by Handel and Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I have been affected quite emotionally by these two pieces and thought they might be a good starting point to explore how we might respond to them using paint and paper. We then went onto explore visual pieces based upon a sound piece I wrote called Mashrabe. We ended up with 4 pieces all around 6 ft in height. For the three or so hours we where together I really did get the profound feeling that there are a lot of things I can’t as yet communicate through sound/music, but using paint opened up something new and I am hoping to explore this further over the coming months.

Join me together with poet and playwright Avaes Mohammad as we present a contemporary engagement with Attar’s famous Sufi poem, Mantiq al-Ta’ir (The Conference of the Birds), with a new telling told through sound art and poetry. Journey upon Attar’s sacred philosophical voyage, through an ethereal theatrical experience, mobilised by the universal vehicles of sound and word. This piece is created entirely by the manipulation of my voice and Avaes’s poetry.

This is a “Friday Late” event which celebrates Norouz, Persian New Year. The National Art Library only has a limited number of seats and we are only doing one performance so please get down early if you can to avoid disappointment.
